Only 31 signed copies of Awesome Women of Singapore (Epigram, 2021) exist, and 15% of funds raised will support SCWO’s ongoing work to champion gender equality in Singapore.

AWARE and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) gathered signatures from more than 30 living honourees of the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame — including former President Halimah Yacob, AWARE’s former presidents and veteran changemakers Kanwaljit Soin and Constance Singam, Peranakan chef-restaurateur Violet Oon, and co-founder of Medical Aid for Palestinians Ang Swee Chai.

To collect these signatures, AWARE supporter Shyn Yee Ho-Strangas and her children journeyed over 500 kilometres around Singapore, meeting these extraordinary women in person.

About the book:

Awesome Women of Singapore is a collection of stories of the inspirational women found throughout the country’s past to the present day, including Hajjah Fatimah binte Sulaiman, the businesswoman and philanthropist to whom the mosque at Beach Road is dedicated; Yip Pin Xiu, Singapore’s most decorated Paralympian; and Hedwig Anuar, who was the director of the National Library for 28 years. Lawyers, activists, soldiers, swimmers and scientists, these women, from all colours and creeds, fought to break the mould. Singapore today is partly shaped through their tremendous work.

The book hopes to encourage young children and inspire generations with the stories of these Singapore women—all from the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame—who worked hard to achieve their dreams. Many saw hardships along the way, but they never gave up.

Illustrated by 10 female Singapore artists, this book was produced in collaboration with the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO). The book's editor, Margaret Thomas, is a seasoned writer who has been deeply involved in SCWO activities.
